Chapter Fifteen
Graffiti
As much as he would have liked to go, Jeff declined Katherineâs offer for him to come over to her house for lunch. He seriously considered it, and she repeated the offer enough times so he knew she really meant it, but he felt so drained by the morningâs events that all he wanted to do was go back to Judyâs house, take another shower and a couple of aspirin, and lie down for a while. He didnât have a bad headacheânot yet, but he could feel one coming on, building up strength like a thunderstorm just below the horizon.
The minister and undertaker each expressed their condolences to Jeff before leaving, but Jeff and Katherine stayed behind at the cemetery, huddling beneath her umbrella as the rain beat down on them. Danny waited in the car, his pale face looking wraithlike through the misted car window.
Jeff and Katherine said very little as they both stared thoughtfully at the flower-covered grave. Finally, once he thought he was ready to leave, Jeff turned to Katherine and gave her a bracing hug.

She felt so ⦠so different from Sally, and as much as he didnât want it to happen, he felt himself getting an erection just by touching her. He tried not to imagine what might happen if he did take her up on her offer to go back to her house.
Go ahead, whispered a teasing voice in the back of his mind. You know you want to ⦠and who the hellâs ever going to know, huh?
After saying goodbye and repeating his vague promise that they would get together before he went back to Colorado, he got into his car and drove back to Cape Higgins alone. He knew it would take a long timeâmaybe the rest of his lifeâfor the reality of everything he had just been through to sink in, but he also knew that he just had to keep moving ahead and try to accept it.
Judy was dead ⦠dead and buried, and there wasnât a damned thing he could do about it!
There was a cold emptiness in his life, and he knew no matter what else ever happened to him, that emptiness would never be entirely filled.
Tears were running from his eyes, blurring his vision as he drove back through town and turned onto Long Shore Drive. The hollow, lonely ache in his
